Overview
Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance', 'Totally Awe Sum' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its four-color banding pattern. The leaf center is light green, sometimes entirely white, bordered by a greenish-yellow band and a white stripe, with a green margin; the heavily rippled, twisted, and corrugated foliage gives the plant a highly textured appearance.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms an upright clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the variegation remains stable, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size and bold leaf texture make it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
