Overview

Registered in 1995, *Hosta* 'Salute' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from self-pollinated seedlings of *Hosta* 'Dorset Blue'. It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green leaves with smooth margins, a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and a cordate base, combined with tall, glaucous blue scapes.

In the Garden

'Hosta' 'Salute' reaches a mature height of 14 inches (35.6 cm) and a spread of 10 inches (25.4 cm), with a semi-upright habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom is best preserved. Its medium size suits it for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen in a woodland garden, pairing well with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, glaucous leaves offer some resistance to slugs, though standard slug control measures may still be beneficial in damp conditions; deer may browse the foliage.
