Overview

Registered in 2008, *Hosta* 'Purple Rain' is a medium-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Uncle Albert' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Halcyon' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, combined with slightly rippled margins and moderate cupping and folding.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature spread of approximately 35 inches (88.9 cm) and a height of 12 inches (30.5 cm), with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in shaded beds.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in typical hosta-growing zones.
