About The Hosta Farm
The Hosta Farm is an independent reference site about hostas: cultivar pages built on American Hosta Society registry data, care guides and buying guides for gardeners in the United States and beyond.
We are not a nursery and we do not sell plants. The site is an independent reference supported by advertising and, on some pages, Amazon affiliate links.
What we publish
- Cultivar pages. Registration facts — year, originator, registrant, size class, leaf and flower details, parentage — come from the American Hosta Society Registry. Every cultivar page with registry data links to its registry record so you can check the data at the source, and the pages we have checked and written up show the date of that check.
- Care and design guides. Planting, dividing, watering, diseases and pests, companion plants and seasonal tasks. Our newer guides cite their sources inline and list them at the end of the article.
- Buying guides. Round-ups of hosta plants, roots, seeds and garden supplies sold on Amazon, grouped by the task they are for. Our notes come from product labels, manuals and extension sources; we have not tested these products ourselves. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
Images
Cultivar photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and are published under Creative Commons licenses or in the public domain. We only show a photo when the file was checked by hand or its file name carries the full cultivar name, and each one is credited with its author, license and a link to the original. Where no such photo exists, a cultivar page may show a watercolor illustration generated with AI; it is labelled as an AI illustration and is not a photograph of the plant. The illustrations on the home page and section pages are AI-generated too. Details are in our editorial policy.
Sources we rely on
- American Hosta Society Registry — the official International Cultivar Registration Authority for the genus Hosta
- American Hosta Society
- University extension services, for example University of Minnesota Extension, Penn State Extension, Iowa State University Extension and the NC State Extension Plant Toolbox
- Missouri Botanical Garden Plant Finder and the Royal Horticultural Society
- ASPCA Toxic and Non-Toxic Plants list (pet safety)
- Wikimedia Commons (photographs)
How we work
What we check, against which sources, and how we use AI is described in our editorial policy.
