Overview
Registered in 1991 by Briggs Nursery, this medium-sized hosta cultivar produces blue-green foliage with distinctive blue margins and cordate leaf bases. The leaves measure 7 inches (17.8 cm) long by 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) wide, with ten pairs of veins, forming a plant that reaches 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter.
In the Garden
'Bruce's Blue' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green coloration is most pronounced. At maturity, this medium-sized cultivar forms a rounded clump suitable for the middle of the shade border or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its blue foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, requiring protection in areas where these pests are prevalent.
