Overview

Registered in 2001, *Hosta* 'Sultan's Smoke' is a large, upright cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'Galaxy'* and *H. 'Incredible Hunk'*. Its most distinctive feature is the variable, multi-colored streaking—ranging from blue-green and dark green to greenish yellow, yellow, and golden yellow—that appears on the medium green leaves, which also bear gold margins.

'Sultan's Smoke' reaches a mature size of 26 inches (66.0 cm) in height and 31 inches (78.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its large, deeply corrugated leaves provide substantial textural contrast. The upright habit and glaucous green scapes make it effective as a specimen or in mixed shade borders, though its size limits use in small containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may require protective measures.
