What it looks like
'Patriot' has dark green, glossy leaves with a 1 in (2.5 cm) white margin (AHS registry). The Hosta of the Year booklet sums it up as "the same dark green center and form of 'Francee', but with a much wider white margin that is crisp and striking". Leaves are 7 × 5 in with 8–10 vein pairs. Flowers are medium violet, striped and tubular, recorded in Virginia from mid June to mid July.

The two rows come from different sources and describe different clumps, so they are not directly comparable.
Where it fits
The booklet lists the habit as mounding and the grown clump as 22 × 50 in; the registry gives no habit. The booklet also notes "good sun tolerance", so it is a candidate for a spot with some sun; how much is not stated.

- 'Francee' is the parent: same green, narrower white margin (booklet), and a 9 × 6 in leaf in its registry record (no plant size on file).
- 'Minuteman' is another 'Francee' sport registered by J. Machen, Jr., with a 0.75 in creamy white margin, a 6 × 4 in leaf and a registered clump of 12 × 24 in (12 × 30 in for 'Patriot'). Pick 'Minuteman' if a creamy edge matters more than a wide one; 'Patriot' has the 1 in white margin on a glossy leaf.
- 'Fire and Ice' is a sport of 'Patriot' with the colors reversed: a pure white center with a 1 in dark green margin on an upright plant (registry).
