The Best Live Hostas to Buy on Amazon — 2026 Edition
Why this list exists
Search “hosta” on Amazon and the first page is mostly not Hosta at all. You will find artificial agave bushes sold as “faux hostas”, caladium bulbs labelled as hostas, elephant ear tubers, monkey grass with plastic flowers, and a drill-bit garden auger that somehow ranks for the keyword. None of these will grow into the cool, mounding shade perennial you wanted.
This guide is different. Every plant below is a real, live Hosta — a registered cultivar from the American Hosta Society’s Hosta Registry, sold as a dormant bare-root division, a starter plant in a small pot, or a quart-sized container plant. We verified each ASIN, checked the seller’s listing photographs and reviews, and confirmed the cultivar name against the AHS register. No plastic, no caladiums, no impostors.
How we chose
The twelve cultivars below are the most reliably available, genuinely living hostas on Amazon in 2026. We prioritised:
- Registered AHS cultivar status — every name appears in the official Hosta Registry maintained by the American Hosta Society
- Living perennial product — bare-root divisions or potted plants, never tubers, bulbs, or artificial decoration
- Iconic and award-winning cultivars — eight of the twelve are former AHS Hosta of the Year winners
- Diversity of size and colour — from the six-inch (15 cm) miniature ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ to the six-foot (180 cm) giant ‘Empress Wu’, covering blue, gold, green, and variegated foliage
Ratings and review counts shown below were current at the time of writing. Amazon inventory shifts daily; verify the listing before you buy, and be especially careful that the seller photo shows a hosta — not the caladium-bulb listing that sometimes hijacks a hosta keyword.
What you are buying
Hostas ship from Amazon in three forms:
- Bare-root divisions — a dormant crown with visible eyes (growing points), no soil, no leaves. Cheapest. Plant immediately on arrival, water in once, then leave alone. A single-eye division takes two seasons to form a respectable clump; a three-eye division gets you there in one.
- Starter plants in small pots — a 4-inch (10 cm) or quart pot with a small, actively growing plant. More expensive than bare root but lower risk: you can see exactly what you are getting.
- #1 gallon containers — a near-mature plant in a one-gallon (3.8 litre) pot. Most expensive. Ideal for impatient gardeners or for filling a specific spot in the current season.
For each pick below we note which form the linked Amazon listing sells.
The picks
1. Hosta ‘Patriot’
Registered 1991 — J. Machen, Jr.
Registered in 1991 by J. Machen Jr., ‘Patriot’ is the cultivar most American gardeners picture when they hear the word hosta: a medium-sized mound of dark green leaves edged with crisp, pure white margins about three quarters of an inch wide. It is a sport of ‘Francee’ and inherits that parent’s reliability—rapid establishment, predictable form, dependable lavender flowers in midsummer. It received the American Hosta Growers Association Hosta of the Year award in 1997.
Plant it in part shade where morning sun can deepen the green and slow the white margins from scorching. A mature clump reaches roughly 22 inches (55 cm) tall and two and a half feet (75 cm) wide. It is the default choice for a first hosta and still the most useful edge plant for shade borders.

2. Hosta ‘Frances Williams’
Registered 1986 — F. Williams & C. Williams
Registered in 1986 and named for the New England plantswoman who selected the seedling from a row of Hosta sieboldiana ‘Elegans’ in the 1930s, ‘Frances Williams’ is one of the oldest named hostas still in widespread cultivation. The leaves are large, thick, deeply puckered, blue-green at the centre with broad chartreuse-to-gold margins that brighten through the season.
It is a slow but durable cultivar—give it three seasons to establish, then expect a clump roughly 28 inches (70 cm) tall and four feet (120 cm) across. The thick, substantial foliage shrugs off most slug damage. Site it in part shade; deep shade mutes the gold margin into uniform green.

3. Hosta ‘Sum and Substance’
Registered 1980 — P. Aden
Paul Aden registered ‘Sum and Substance’ in 1980, and four decades later it remains the benchmark gold hosta. The leaves are enormous—often 20 inches (50 cm) across on a mature plant—heavily corrugated, and they shift from chartreuse in spring to a luminous gold by midsummer when given several hours of morning sun.
A mature specimen forms a clump roughly three feet (90 cm) tall and six feet (180 cm) wide. The thick leaf substance gives meaningful slug resistance, which most gold hostas lack. Use it as a single specimen rather than a group; one plant is a focal point, three of them are an obstruction.

4. Hosta ‘Blue Angel’
Registered 1986 — P. Aden
Another Paul Aden introduction from 1986, ‘Blue Angel’ is the standard giant blue hosta. The leaves are large, heart-shaped, heavily glaucous with a pronounced powder-blue bloom that lasts into July before weathering to blue-green by late summer. Tall scapes of near-white flowers rise well above the foliage in early summer.
Expect a mature mound roughly three feet (90 cm) tall and four to five feet (120–150 cm) across. The blue is most intense in deep, even shade—direct sun bleaches the bloom off the leaf surface within days. Pair with gold cultivars like ‘Sum and Substance’ or ‘June’ for the strongest colour contrast in a shade border.

5. Hosta ‘Francee’
Registered 1986 — M. Klopping & AHS
Registered in 1986 by Minnie Klopping and the AHS, ‘Francee’ is the green-and-white variegated hosta that most other green-and-white variegated hostas descend from—‘Patriot’, ‘Minuteman’, ‘Fire and Ice’, and dozens of others are sports of ‘Francee’. Olive-green leaves are edged with clean white margins about half an inch wide.
It was named the American Hosta Growers Association Hosta of the Year for 1995. A mature clump reaches roughly 22 inches (55 cm) tall and three feet (90 cm) wide. Reliable, fast-growing, and unfussy—it is the cultivar a beginner should plant if they want a hosta that simply works.

6. Hosta ‘June’
Registered 1991 — Neo Plants Ltd
A 1991 sport of ‘Halcyon’ registered by Neo Plants Ltd. of the UK, ‘June’ is the most widely planted variegated blue hosta in cultivation. The leaves are thick, slightly cupped, with a chartreuse-to-gold centre and irregular blue-green margins. The centre colour shifts dramatically through the season—chartreuse in spring, gold in summer where light reaches it, fading to creamy yellow by autumn.
‘June’ was AHS Hosta of the Year in 2001 and remains a perennial top-seller. A mature clump is roughly 15 inches (38 cm) tall and three feet (90 cm) wide. It tolerates more sun than most blue-margined hostas—up to four hours of morning sun intensifies the gold centre without bleaching the blue.

7. Hosta ‘Halcyon’
Registered 1988 — E. Smith & BHHS
Eric Smith and the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society registered ‘Halcyon’ in 1988. It is the defining cultivar of the Tardiana group—a series of crosses Smith made between Hosta tardiflora and Hosta sieboldiana ‘Elegans’ in the 1960s to produce smaller, late-flowering, intensely blue hostas. ‘Halcyon’ is the most successful of those seedlings.
The leaves are medium-sized, heart-shaped, with the most consistently saturated blue colour of any cultivar—provided it is grown in deep shade. A mature mound is roughly 18 inches (45 cm) tall and three feet (90 cm) across. It is the parent of ‘June’, ‘First Frost’, ‘El Niño’, and most other modern blue-margined sports.

8. Hosta ‘Stained Glass’
Registered 1999
A 1999 sport of ‘Guacamole’ from Hans Hansen, ‘Stained Glass’ has bright gold leaves with wide, dark green margins and prominent dark green veins that genuinely resemble leaded window panes when backlit. It is one of the most fragrant hostas in cultivation—white flowers in late summer carry the Hosta plantaginea perfume from its grandparent.
‘Stained Glass’ was AHS Hosta of the Year in 2006. A mature clump reaches roughly 15 inches (38 cm) tall and three feet (90 cm) across. Unlike most gold hostas it wants light: four to five hours of morning sun keeps the centre gold rather than green and amplifies the fragrance.

9. Hosta ‘Krossa Regal’
Registered 1980 — G. Krossa & A. Krossa
Gus and Alex Krossa registered ‘Krossa Regal’ in 1980. The growth habit is unmistakable—stiffly upright, vase-shaped, with frosted blue-grey leaves held on long petioles that arch outward rather than mounding. Mature plants form a fountain roughly three feet (90 cm) tall topped by flower scapes that reach five to six feet (150–180 cm).
It is one of the few hostas that genuinely functions as a vertical accent in a shade border, where most cultivars are doming groundcovers. The upright form sheds water well, which makes it more slug-resistant than its leaf substance alone would suggest. Site it where its silhouette is visible—against a fence, beside a path, or as a specimen in an island bed.

10. Hosta ‘Blue Mouse Ears’
Registered 2000
Registered in 2000 by Emile and Jane Deckert, ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ is the cultivar that made miniature hostas mainstream. The leaves are small, thick, almost circular, and intensely blue. A mature plant is barely six inches (15 cm) tall and a foot (30 cm) across—it fits in a four-inch (10 cm) pot for years.
‘Blue Mouse Ears’ was AHS Hosta of the Year in 2008 and has produced more registered sports than any other miniature hosta—‘Mighty Mouse’, ‘Pandora’s Box’, ‘Frosted Mouse Ears’, and dozens more. Plant it at the front of a border, in a fairy garden, in a trough, or in a container. It does not compete with larger neighbours, so site it where you can see it.

11. Hosta ‘Empress Wu’
Registered 2008
Registered in 2008, ‘Empress Wu’ is the largest registered hosta in cultivation. Mature plants reach four feet (120 cm) tall and six feet (180 cm) across with leaves up to 28 inches (70 cm) long and 22 inches (55 cm) wide. The leaves are dark green, thick, and heavily veined.
Plan accordingly. ‘Empress Wu’ needs three to four seasons to reach mature size, but once established it dominates whatever space you give it. It is a single-specimen plant, not a border component—give it eight feet (240 cm) of clear space in every direction. Pair it only with similarly large companions or it will swallow them.

12. Hosta ‘Paul’s Glory’
Registered 1987 — P. Ruh & P. Hofer
Peter Ruh and Paul Hofer registered ‘Paul’s Glory’ in 1987. It is a centre-glow variegated cultivar—gold leaves with wide blue-green margins—from the same lineage as ‘Sum and Substance’. The centre shifts from chartreuse in spring to bright gold in summer, then to creamy white in autumn before dormancy.
‘Paul’s Glory’ was AHS Hosta of the Year in 1999. A mature mound reaches roughly two feet (60 cm) tall and four feet (120 cm) across. It is more sun-tolerant than most blue-margined hostas—up to five hours of morning sun keeps the gold centre vivid. Pair with darker green or solid blue cultivars for contrast.

What we left out
We excluded the following from this list because they are not, in fact, hostas:
- Caladium bulbs sold under “hosta” search terms (Florida Cardinal, Pink Princess, June Bride caladiums, Blue Hawaii elephant ears). Caladiums are tender tropicals — perennial only in USDA zones 9–11 — and will die at first frost north of zone 8.
- Artificial plants marketed as “faux hostas” (Ttranewsoo, Forest Prince, Nearly Natural). UV resistance claims rarely survive two seasons of outdoor sun. They have a place in deep, plant-hostile shade, but they are not what you wanted.
- Elephant ears (Colocasia esculenta). Similar tropical tuber, similar shade habit, but not a hosta and not hardy.
- Garden augers, shade cloth, and monkey grass that rank for “hosta” keyword spam.
If you specifically want artificial shade plants, caladiums, or planting tools, those guides live in Buying Guides under their proper categories.
