It was never an AHGA Hosta of the Year, so there is no second AHS size. Registered sizes are registration data, not a promise of garden size.

Where it fits

An upright plant registered at 36 in across and 36 in high, with scapes recorded at twice that height. The registry does not give bloom dates, so we cannot say when those scapes appear.

How it compares

  • 'Regal Splendor' is its sport: frosty blue leaves with a creamy yellow margin in spring, changing to a creamy white margin on a dark green center by mid-summer (booklet). Registered at 40 in across and 38 in high; the booklet gives 30 × 70 in.
  • 'Sagae' is also upright (booklet) with yellow-to-cream margins and wider leaves (12.5 × 9.5 in registered).
  • 'Halcyon' is a medium blue that the booklet calls mounding, with much smaller, pointed leaves (4 × 3 in registered).

Parentage and awards

Hybrid of H. nigrescens (registry). Registered by G. Krossa and A. Krossa.

  • Benedict Award of Merit 2008; also on the 2006 combined Award of Merit and Honorable Mention list (AHS Benedict list). It has not received the Benedict Medal.
  • Listed in AHS Popularity Polls between 2001 and 2017.

Limits and unknowns

The registry entry gives no growth rate, leaf texture or bloom dates, and none of the AHS sources we checked says how it copes with slugs or bright light. General planting advice is in our hosta care guide.
