Overview

Registered in 2005 by an unknown breeder, 'Gentle Giant' is a giant-sized hosta distinguished by its intensely blue-green, nearly round leaves that are deeply cupped, moderately corrugated, and edged with slightly rippled margins. The cultivar forms a substantial, upright mound reaching 42 inches (106.7 cm) in height and 68 inches (172.7 cm) in diameter, with lavender flowers borne on scapes 48 to 55 inches (121.9 to 139.7 cm) tall.

In the Garden

'Gentle Giant' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains its color most effectively. With its substantial mature spread of nearly six feet, this cultivar requires ample space and is well-suited as a specimen plant or as a bold accent in the middle to back of a shaded border. Its large, corrugated leaves provide strong textural contrast when paired with finer-textured shade perennials such as ferns or Japanese forest grass.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While hostas are generally susceptible to slug damage, the thick, corrugated leaves of 'Gentle Giant' offer moderate resistance; deer may still browse the foliage in areas where they are present.
