Overview

Registered in 2016 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Krossa Regal', 'Bullfrog' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its unusual variegation pattern: dark green leaf margins with creamy white centers, but with prominent dark green streaks intruding into the center tissue and thin white streaks occasionally appearing in the margins. The leaves are moderately twisted overall, adding further visual interest to this compact plant.

In the Garden

'Bullfrog' forms an upright mound reaching 13 inches (33.0 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate that makes it well-suited for smaller garden spaces or the front of a border. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with other shade-loving perennials such as ferns, heucheras, and small woodland wildflowers. Its compact size also makes it a candidate for container cultivation, provided the pot offers adequate drainage.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Bullfrog' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor for these pests and take appropriate control measures in typical hosta-growing zones.
