H. ‘Lakeside Beloved’

Overview

'Lakeside Beloved' was registered in 1999 by M. Chastain of Ooltewah, Tennessee, who is credited as originator, namer, introducer and registrant. Both parents are listed only as seedlings. The leaf is medium green with a creamy white margin, 8 in (20.3 cm) long and 5 in (12.7 cm) wide with 10 vein pairs.

In the Garden

This is one of the thinner entries in the registry. No plant size, habit, growth rate or scape height is given, and the clump history says the measured plant was one year old. The flower entry names a location but no color or dates. Any figure for the mature clump would have to come from outside the registry, and we have not found a reliable one.

How it compares

'Francee' is a dark green, white-margined hosta in the same show class. The AHS registry record lists it as a sport of 'Fortunei', with a 9 by 6 in leaf and 36 in scapes; like 'Lakeside Beloved', it has no plant size on file.

'Patriot', a sport of 'Francee' and Hosta of the Year 1997, has a 1 in white margin on dark green. The booklet sizes it at 22 in high by 50 in wide.

'Cathy's Clown' (2011) is the closest match in leaf color: medium green with a 0.75 in creamy white margin, wider at mid leaf than at the base, on a mound-like plant registered at 36 in across and 16 in high, with bloom recorded from June 1 to July 15.

Flowers and other notes
