Overview

Registered in 2004 by R. Klehm as a sport of *Hosta* 'Maekawa', 'Nutty Professor' is a giant hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves with broad, creamy white margins. The leaves are broadly ovate with cordate bases, lightly wavy margins, and a slightly glossy upper surface with a glaucous bloom beneath.

In the Garden

'Nutty Professor' forms a substantial mound 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter and 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its large leaves make it suitable as a specimen plant or for the back of a shaded border. The white margins provide contrast when paired with dark-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing.
