Overview
Registered in 1995, *Hosta* 'Valencia' is a small-sized cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Iron Gate Delight' as the pollen parent. It is visually distinguished by its blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on the upper surface and a very shiny underside, each leaf bearing a creamy white, slightly rippled margin approximately 0.6 inches (1.5 cm) wide.
In the Garden
'Valencia' reaches a mature diameter of 14 inches (35.6 cm) and a height of 10 inches (25.4 cm), with a semi-upright growth habit and fast growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones and pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact size makes it appropriate for rock gardens, troughs, or container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may damage foliage, the thick, glaucous leaves offer moderate resistance; monitor and control pests as needed.
