Overview
Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Blue Flame' is a sport of *Hosta* 'Fragrant Blue' and is notable for its intensely blue-green leaves with creamy white margins. This small-sized cultivar reaches 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in diameter, with broadly ovate leaves measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, each bearing eight vein pairs and a glaucous bloom on both surfaces.
In the Garden
'Blue Flame' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage and white margins remain most vivid. Its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings, and it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The scape, also blue-green, reaches 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Blue Flame' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in typical hosta-growing zones.
