Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Obscura' registered in 2007, 'Sydney's Spunk' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its medium green leaves with broad, creamy white margins. The ovate leaves, measuring 4 inches long and 2.5 inches wide, feature 7 to 8 vein pairs, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a dull underside with lightly wavy edges.
In the Garden
This compact hosta reaches a mature height of 10 inches and a spread of 12 inches, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes. The 14- to 18-inch scapes produce lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Sydney's Spunk' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary.
