Overview

Registered in 1995, 'Crow's Nest' is a small hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its compact mound of dark green leaves with creamy white margins, combined with an unusually tall scape that reaches over four times the height of the foliage.

In the Garden

This small hosta forms a dense, fast-growing mound 9 inches (22.9 cm) tall and 20 inches (50.8 cm) wide, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as an edging plant. Its leaves are 5 inches (12.7 cm) long and 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide, with five vein pairs and a tapered base; the dark green blade is bordered by a 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) creamy white, slightly rippled margin, with a slight shine on both surfaces. The scape, 43 to 45 inches (109.2 to 114.3 cm) tall and colored green with light red, elevates the flowers well above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact size also makes it suitable for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage.
