Year registered2000
Section classII-7 (Large)

Overview

Registered in 2000, 'Topsy-turvy' is a large hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'William Lachman' (seed parent) and *Hosta hypoleuca* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its upright, slow-growing habit and heavily rippled, dark green leaf margins that contrast with the blue-green leaf surface, which bears a glaucous bloom on the underside.

In the Garden

'Topsy-turvy' reaches a mature size of approximately 21 inches (53 cm) in diameter and 20 inches (51 cm) in height, with scapes rising 23 to 27 inches (58 to 69 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-green hostas, and benefits from protection from intense afternoon sun. Its large, textured leaves make it a suitable specimen or accent plant in shaded borders, woodland gardens, or mixed shade plantings; it is not recommended for container culture due to its size.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitoring and appropriate deterrents are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
