Overview
Registered in 2000, this large hosta cultivar resulted from a cross between *Hosta* 'William Lachman' and *Hosta hypoleuca*. It is visually distinctive for its medium blue-green leaves with a slightly rippled margin of the same color, creating a subtle streaked effect, and for its glaucous bloom on the leaf undersides.
In the Garden
'Fickle Blue Genes' forms an upright clump reaching approximately 26 inches (66 cm) in diameter and 23 inches (58 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed borders, but it is not recommended for container culture due to its mature dimensions.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may require protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
