Overview
Registered in 2000, *Hosta* 'Fifth Element' is a hybrid between *Hosta* 'William Lachman' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Big Daddy' (pollen parent). This large cultivar is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green leaves with streaked margins and a pronounced glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces.
In the Garden
'Fifth Element' forms an upright clump reaching 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its large, cordate leaves (9 inches long by 8 inches wide with 12 vein pairs) provide substantial textural contrast in the border. The 20- to 24-inch (50.8–61.0 cm) green scapes bear flowers in midsummer. This cultivar is suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds; its size precludes use in small containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents may be necessary, as this cultivar is not notably resistant to either pest.
