Overview
Registered in 2010 from unknown parentage, 'Ready Freddy' is a giant blue-green hosta distinguished by its heavily corrugated, broadly ovate leaves with dark green, heavily rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on the undersides. The cultivar produces a substantial mound of foliage reaching 72 inches (182.9 cm) in diameter and 38 inches (96.5 cm) in height, with near-white flowers borne on green scapes 45 to 52 inches (114.3 to 132.1 cm) tall.
In the Garden
'Ready Freddy' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green leaves maintain their coloration and the deeply corrugated texture is most pronounced. At giant mature size, it functions as a specimen plant or a bold accent in large borders, pairing well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast its substantial foliage. Its moderate growth rate and mound-like habit make it suitable for spacious woodland gardens or as a backdrop in mixed shade beds.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and snails may damage the leaves, the heavy substance of the foliage offers some resistance; typical hosta-growing zones apply.
