Overview

Registered in 1992 by G. Krossa and introduced by P. Ruh, this giant variegated hosta is a hybrid of *Hosta montana*. It forms a substantial mound of large, cordate leaves with medium grey-green margins and a dull upper surface, contrasting with a satin sheen beneath; the leaf blade reaches 41.3 cm long and 28.6 cm wide, with 17 vein pairs.

In the Garden

'King James' is suited to partial to full shade, where its substantial foliage creates a bold ground-level presence. Mature plants reach approximately 150 cm in diameter and 69 cm in height, making them appropriate for the middle to back of a border or as a specimen in a woodland garden. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its large, textured leaves.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in typical hosta-growing zones.
