Overview

Registered in 2006 as a sport of an unnamed parent, 'Prom Queen' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its tricolored foliage: a yellow leaf center with a wide, medium blue-green margin that contains medium green streaks. The leaves are ovate with cordate bases, lightly cupped and corrugated, with dull surfaces above and below.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 18 inches (45.7 cm), with an upright, moderate growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its three distinct leaf colors provide sustained visual interest throughout the growing season. The substantial leaf substance makes it suitable for mixed shade borders or as a specimen in woodland gardens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Prom Queen' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
