Overview
Registered in 2006 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Abba Dabba Do', 'Dab a Green' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with narrow, golden yellow margins. The leaf blade is ovate with a rounded base, lightly wavy and corrugated, bearing 13 to 14 pairs of veins; the upper surface is slightly shiny, while the underside carries a thin glaucous bloom. The margin measures approximately 0.25 inches (0.6 cm) wide, notably narrower than that of similar green-edged sports of *Hosta* 'Sun Power'.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 45 inches (114.3 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the blue-green leaf centers and gold margins hold their color; excessive sun may cause marginal burning. The scapes rise 30 to 40 inches (76.2 to 101.6 cm) and are medium golden yellow. 'Dab a Green' pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials in borders or woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry spells, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through cultural or physical controls. This cultivar is hardy in typical hosta-growing zones.
