Overview

Registered in 2003 as a sport of an unnamed parent, 'Judi's Joy' is a small hosta distinguished by its unstable variegation: blue-green leaves display irregular mottling and blotching of gold and white, with veins often remaining green in lighter leaf areas. The leaf surface is deeply corrugated and slightly shiny above, with a glaucous bloom beneath, and the margins are slightly rippled.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its unstable variegation is most pronounced. Suitable companions include ferns, heucheras, and other small hostas; its compact size makes it appropriate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are recommended for typical hosta-growing zones.
