Overview
Registered in 2003 by an unknown hybridizer, *Hosta* 'An Old Smoothie' is a small-sized cultivar notable for its highly unstable leaf variegation, producing irregular streaks of blue-green, light green, dark green, greenish-yellow, and cream against a medium green ground. The pod parent is *Hosta* 'William Lachman'; the pollen parent is unknown. The leaves are ovate with rounded bases, very shiny on the upper surface, and bear a glaucous bloom beneath, giving the undersides a white appearance. Each leaf measures approximately 5.75 inches (14.6 cm) long and 3.25 inches (8.3 cm) wide, with 7 to 8 vein pairs and flat, cream-colored margins.
In the Garden
'An Old Smoothie' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where its distinctive streaky foliage and good substance are maintained. Its small stature makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. Companion plants include small ferns, *Heuchera*, or other miniature hostas.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
