Overview
Registered in 2000, 'Stars and Stripes' is a small hosta cultivar derived from a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Color Fantasy'. It is visually distinctive for its medium blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on the upper surface and slightly rippled margins, combined with a slightly shiny underside and flat leaf bases.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact mound reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 26 inches (66.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and performs well in borders, rock gardens, or as edging. Its small size makes it appropriate for container cultivation. Companion plants might include ferns, heucheras, or other small shade perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Stars and Stripes' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
