Overview

Registered in 2009 by K. Walek through the American Hosta Society, 'Uzu-no-mai' is a miniature hosta of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive features are the blue-green leaves with a shiny glaucous bloom on the undersides and medium green, slightly rippled margins.

In the Garden

This compact cultivar forms a low mound reaching approximately 5 inches (12.7 cm) in diameter and 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) in height, making it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with other small perennials such as miniature ferns or woodland groundcovers. Its miniature size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Uzu-no-mai' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate protective measures should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
