Overview
P. & J. Ruh registered 'Gus' in 2008, and the parentage is listed as unknown. The registry describes it as an all-green miniature with long petioles. The leaf is a light green lance, 3.63 in by 1.13 in with only 3 to 4 vein pairs. It is lightly cupped, lightly twisted and lightly folded. The AHS registry record gives pale purple, heavily striped flowers from late July to mid-August in Chesterland, Ohio.
In the Garden
The clump is registered as tall as it is wide, 11 in by 11 in, with a moderate growth rate. The long petioles are the one feature the registrant singles out. The green scapes reach 18 to 25 in.
How it compares
'Blue Mouse Ears' was Hosta of the Year in 2008. It won the Benedict award in 2011. It is registered at 9 in across and 5 in high, with a medium blue-green leaf 2.8 in by 2 in. The contrast is broad blue against narrow green.
'X-rated' also has a narrow lance leaf, 5 in by 0.63 in, but it is pure white with a thin green edge and is registered at only 2 in high and 9 in across.
'Urchin' is registered at 13 in across and 8 in high, with a very shiny, pointed-ruffled leaf. Pick it if a glossy, ruffled leaf matters more than a plain one; 'Gus' is dull on top.
