Year registered2000
Section classII-4b (Large)

Overview

A sport of the widely grown *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance', registered in 2000, 'Sum Cup-o-Joe' is a large, fast-growing cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves edged with narrow, creamy white margins. The leaf surface is slightly shiny above with a glaucous bloom beneath, and the margins are slightly rippled, giving the foliage a subtle texture.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of approximately 46 inches (117 cm) and a height of 26 inches (66 cm), with an upright growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or for the middle to back of a border. The greenish red scapes, rising 35 to 39 inches (89 to 99 cm), bear flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it may be susceptible to slug damage; deer resistance is not documented.
