Registered in 1989 by C. Starker and P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Starker Yellow Leaf' is a giant-sized cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its large, heavily textured green leaves with gold margins and small yellow-green undulations along the leaf edges.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 53 inches (134.6 cm) and a height of 27 inches (68.6 cm), with scapes rising to 42 inches (106.7 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain most vivid. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or as a backdrop in mixed shade borders; companion plants include ferns, astilbes, and other large-leaved perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
