Overview

Registered in 2001 by V. Wade, this medium-sized cultivar is distinguished by its exceptionally glossy, bright green leaves with medium green flat margins. The foliage is broadly ovate with rounded bases, moderately corrugated, and exhibits a very shiny surface on both the upper and lower sides, with eight prominent vein pairs underneath.

In the Garden

'Hosta 'Patent Leather' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 29 inches (73.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials. Its compact size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or container plantings.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While the thick leaves provide some resistance, monitor for slug and deer damage in susceptible areas.
