Overview
Registered in 1998 by H. Sugita and P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Dragon's Blood' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a cross between *H. longipes* and *H. pycnophylla*. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with heavy, medium-green rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a glaucous bloom on the underside.
In the Garden
'Dragon's Blood' forms a mound-like clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen plant. Its medium size and cordate leaves make it a good companion for ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed.
