Overview
Registered in 2001, *Hosta* 'Lucille' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'Josephine'* and *H. 'Green Piecrust'*. It is visually distinguished by its very shiny, dark green leaves with a lightly wavy, piecrust margin and heavy substance, combined with a moderate growth rate and upright habit.
In the Garden
'Lucille' reaches 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter at maturity, forming an upright clump suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its dark green, glossy foliage with piecrust edges pairs well with fine-textured ferns or blue-leaved hostas for contrast. The moderate growth rate makes it appropriate for mixed borders or woodland gardens where it will not quickly overwhelm neighboring plants.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer exposures, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The heavy substance of the leaves offers some resistance to slug damage, though monitoring may still be necessary in damp conditions.
