Overview
Registered in 1981 by M. Seaver, this medium-sized hosta arose as an open-pollinated seedling of *Hosta* 'Sea Sprite'. It is visually distinctive for its upright, vase-like habit and narrow, matte green leaves with undulating margins, which contrast with its tall scapes bearing pale flowers.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Sea Octopus' reaches a mature spread of approximately 16 inches (40.6 cm) and a height of 9 inches (22.9 cm), with upright foliage that lends itself well to the front of a border or as an accent in a woodland garden. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and pairs effectively with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact size and tidy form make it suitable for container culture.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, particularly during dry spells. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
