Overview

Registered in 2013 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Blue Mouse Ears Supreme', 'Mighty Special' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its medium blue-green leaves with greenish yellow marginal streaking. Unlike its parent, whose variegation shifts to yellow and white, the streaking on 'Mighty Special' remains consistently greenish yellow throughout the growing season.

In the Garden

'Mighty Special' forms a compact mound reaching 6 inches (15.2 cm) in height and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. Its nearly round, flat leaves measure 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) in both length and width, featuring slightly shiny upper surfaces and dull undersides. This small hosta is well suited for the front of shade borders, rock gardens, or container plantings, pairing effectively with other small-leaved perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or miniature hostas in typical hosta-growing zones.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Mighty Special' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so appropriate protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
