Overview
Registered in 2013, *Hosta* 'Oil Paint' is a small-sized cultivar resulting from the cross of (*H.* 'Sea Prize' × *H.* 'Hirao Majesty') with *H.* 'Invincible'. Its most distinctive feature is the very shiny, broadly ovate foliage, which displays dark green centers with greenish yellow streaks and gold margins.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of approximately 20 inches (51.8 cm) and height of 12 inches (30.2 cm), 'Oil Paint' forms a compact, mound-like clump with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and is well-suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings due to its small stature. The shiny, streaked leaves provide textural contrast when paired with fine-textured companions such as ferns or *Heuchera*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. The foliage is susceptible to slug and deer damage, requiring standard protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
