H. ‘Locksmith’

Overview

Registered in 2012, *Hosta* 'Locksmith' is a giant, upright, variegated cultivar derived from open-pollinated *Hosta* 'Jade Cascade'. It is visually distinctive for its very large, upright habit, long arching leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins, and star-shaped bud heads with verticillate (whorled) buds.

In the Garden

'Locksmith' reaches a mature diameter of 66 inches (168 cm) and a height of 60 inches (152 cm), with scapes rising 37 to 41 inches (94–104 cm). Its moderate growth rate and upright form make it suitable as a specimen or accent in part shade to light shade in typical hosta-growing zones. The substantial leaf size and arching habit pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials that provide contrasting texture.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable for this large-leaved hosta, though its upright habit may reduce ground-level slug damage.
