Overview
Registered in 2009 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Gunther's Prize', 'Gunther's Rim' is a giant, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with pale yellow margins of variable width. The broadly ovate, cordate-based leaves measure up to 39.6 cm long and 28.7 cm wide, with 12 vein pairs and a slightly rippled margin that ranges from 0.5 to 2.3 cm wide; the upper surface is slightly shiny, while the underside bears a glaucous bloom.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of approximately 168 cm and a height of 58 cm, 'Gunther's Rim' is suited to the middle or back of a shaded border, where its large, blue-green foliage provides a strong textural contrast against finer-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. It performs best in partial to full shade, as the pale yellow margins are most pronounced in moderate light; in deeper shade, the margin may narrow or fade. The moderate growth rate and substantial size make it a reliable specimen for woodland gardens or as a groundcover in large shaded areas.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through routine monitoring or physical barriers.
