Overview

Registered in 2009 as a sport of an unnamed parent, *Hosta* 'Gentle Spirit' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its dark green leaves edged with a narrow, pure white margin. The variegation is subtle yet consistent, with the white border measuring approximately 0.1 inches (0.3 cm) wide and remaining flat against the leaf surface.

In the Garden

'Gentle Spirit' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 9 inches (22.9 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its small stature makes it well-suited for rock gardens, container plantings, or the front of shaded borders. The leaves are broadly ovate with rounded bases and lightly wavy margins, bearing seven pairs of veins; the upper surface is very shiny, while the underside is slightly glossy.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect young foliage from slugs and snails, and monitor for deer damage in areas where these animals are present.
