Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Independence Day' registered in 2010, 'Franc's Dark Within' is distinguished by its large, upright clump of ovate leaves with dark green centers and irregular light green margins. The leaf surface is slightly shiny above and dull beneath, with flat margins and a cordate base, while the scape reaches an unusually tall 46 to 47 inches (117–119 cm).
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound 32 inches (81 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61 cm) tall, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the variegation remains stable, and is suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in typical hosta-growing zones. Its tall scapes make it a candidate for pairing with lower-growing perennials such as ferns or heucheras, which will not obscure the flowers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor regularly and apply controls as needed.
