Overview
A 1998 sport of *Hosta* 'Gold Regal', 'Independence Day' is a large, fast-growing cultivar distinguished by its medium green leaves with golden yellow margins. The leaf margins are flat, and the blade measures 10 inches (25.4 cm) long by 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide, with 15 to 16 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
'Independence Day' reaches a mature spread of 72 inches (182.9 cm) and a height of 48 inches (121.9 cm), with an upright growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or for the back of a shaded border; it is not recommended for container culture due to its dimensions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and control as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
