Overview

Registered in 2005, 'Cascading Waters' is a large hosta cultivar arising from a cross between *Hosta* 'Liberty Bell' (seed parent) and *Hosta hypoleuca* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its cascading mound of broadly ovate, deeply twisted leaves with moderately wavy margins, displaying three to four layers of contrasting color: a blue-green center surrounded by medium grey-green, light grey-green, and creamy white marginal bands.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a fast-growing, mound-like clump reaching 54 inches (137.2 cm) in diameter and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height. Its large, heavily textured leaves—11.75 inches (29.8 cm) long and 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) wide—are dull above with a glaucous bloom beneath, making it suitable for part to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. The cascading habit and bold variegation pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials; its substantial size precludes container use for most gardeners.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, glaucous leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs and deer, though monitoring is advised in damp conditions.
