Overview
Registered in 1974 by Paul Aden, this small hosta was raised from open-pollinated seedlings. 'Gold Regal' is distinguished by its green leaves with yellow-chartreuse margins, a color combination unusual in a plant of its compact stature. The upright to outward-facing foliage forms a dense, symmetrical mound.
In the Garden
With a mature diameter of 24 inches (61.0 cm) and height of 16 inches (40.6 cm), 'Gold Regal' suits the front of a border, rock garden, or container. It performs best in partial shade to dappled light, where the gold margins remain bright without scorching. Pale lavender flowers appear on scapes reaching 42 inches (106.7 cm) in late summer, adding vertical interest above the low foliage. Companion plants with contrasting textures, such as ferns or small-leaved heucheras, complement its tidy habit.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods; avoid overhead watering to prevent foliar disease. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Slugs may damage young leaves, and deer occasionally browse the foliage in typical hosta-growing zones.
