Overview
Registered in 1987 by D. Stone and P. Ruh, 'Ellen' is a miniature hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves with a subtle sheen on the upper surface. The leaf margins are also blue-green, and the foliage is carried on scapes reaching up to 17 inches (43.2 cm) in height.
In the Garden
This compact cultivar forms a mound 6 inches (15.2 cm) tall and 13 inches (33.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for small spaces, rock gardens, or the front of a shaded border. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with other miniature hostas, ferns, or small woodland perennials. Its diminutive size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Ellen' may require protection from slugs and deer in garden settings.
