Overview

Registered in 1974 by F. Shaw, *Hosta* 'Blue Cadet' is a miniature cultivar distinguished by its dense, mound-like growth habit and blue-green foliage. The plant reaches approximately 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height. Its parentage is unknown, with no pollen parent recorded.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'Blue Cadet' is well-suited to shaded or partially shaded locations, where its blue-green leaves develop a glaucous bloom on the undersides. The ovate leaves, measuring 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) long and 1.75 inches (4.4 cm) wide, have cordate bases and are slightly corrugated, with 8 to 9 vein pairs. The leaf margins are medium blue-green without variegation. This cultivar forms a compact, dense mound that works effectively as a groundcover in woodland gardens or as an edging plant along pathways. It may be grown in containers given adequate moisture and shade. Companion plants that share similar cultural requirements include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other miniature hostas.

Care Notes

*Hosta* 'Blue Cadet' performs best in consistently moist, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods. Light fertilization in early spring supports healthy leaf development. As with most hostas, slug and deer pressure should be anticipated; slug control measures may be necessary in damp conditions. The cultivar is hardy in temperate climates typical of USDA zones 3 through 8.
