Overview

Registered in 1990 by Fairway Enterprises, *Hosta* 'Curls' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Tall Twister' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Circus Clown' (pollen parent). The plant is visually distinguished by its medium green leaves with numerous undulating margins, creating a distinctly curled or wavy leaf texture.

In the Garden

'Hosta' Curls forms a compact mound reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in both height and diameter, with individual leaves measuring 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 4 inches (10.2 cm) wide, bearing six pairs of veins. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with other shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, and astilbes. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, rock gardens, or container plantings.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management measures should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
