Overview
Registered in 1983 by E. Minks, 'Circus Clown' is a large variegated hosta resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Ruffles' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Green Piecrust' (pollen parent). Its most distinctive feature is the combination of emerald green, heavily ruffled leaf margins with a lighter leaf center, creating a sharp contrast that gives the cultivar its name.
In the Garden
'Circus Clown' forms a substantial clump reaching 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the variegation remains most stable, and is suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen plant in typical hosta-growing zones. The large, textured leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its bold form.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, ruffled leaves show moderate slug resistance, though monitoring may be necessary in damp conditions.
