Overview

Registered in 2011, 'Cosmic Hot Mama' is a large hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Hot Flash' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Ma Breeder' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its nearly round, corrugated leaves with flat margins that are streaked in pale yellow, greenish white, and creamy white against a green center, and for its reputation as a superior grower compared to its mother plant.

In the Garden

Reaching a mature diameter of 38 inches (96.5 cm) and height of 20 inches (50.8 cm), this mound-forming cultivar is suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones. Its large, textured leaves provide contrast when paired with finer-textured perennials such as ferns or astilbes. The green scapes, rising 32 to 38 inches (81.3 to 96.5 cm), bear lavender flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through routine control measures.
