Overview
Registered in 2008, *Hosta* 'Ma Breeder' is a large, vigorous cultivar derived from a *H. 'Dorothy Benedict'* seedling crossed with *H. 'Dorothy Benedict'* as the pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its heavily corrugated, broadly ovate leaves with green centers and misted, streaked yellow to greenish-yellow flat margins, combined with a slightly shiny upper surface and dull underside.
In the Garden
'Ma Breeder' forms a substantial clump reaching approximately 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter and 23 inches (58.4 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its deeply corrugated foliage and variegated margins are most pronounced. This large hosta is well suited as a specimen plant or for use in mixed shade borders, where it pairs effectively with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Ma Breeder' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
